Leaking underground water pipe spraying into muddy soil in a residential yard

Getting a high water bill out of the blue can be stressful — especially when it turns out to be caused by a hidden leak. The good news? If the leak was genuinely undetected, you may be eligible for a rebate from Icon Water.

At Water Tight Canberra, we’ve helped dozens of Canberra residents and strata managers successfully identify and fix undetected leaks — and claim back hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars in excess water usage fees.

Can I Really Claim a Refund for a Leak?

Yes — Icon Water offers a “Leak Allowance” if you can demonstrate that:

  • The leak was undetectable (for example, underground and absorbing into soil),
  • It’s now been fixed,
  • You provide a plumber’s report detailing the leak and confirming repairs.

More details can be found on the Icon Water website:

How Water Tight Canberra Can Help

If you suspect a leak or have received an unusually high water bill, we can:
✅ Quickly attend your site and perform expert leak detection
✅ Repair the leak efficiently and professionally
Provide a full leak report, including details of the leak location, cause, and how it went undetected
✅ Supply supporting documentation (including photos and invoices) to assist your Icon Water claim

If we believe the leak was clearly undetected — such as underground burst pipes — we’ll walk you through the exact steps needed to lodge your claim.

What Does a Leak Report Include?

Here’s an example of what we include in our reports:

  • Job details and date
  • Site address
  • What was investigated
  • Where the leak was located
  • The cause of the leak
  • Why the water loss wasn’t obvious (e.g., underground absorption)
  • Photos of the leak and repair

This report, along with your plumbing invoice and water bill, can be submitted to Icon Water.

How to Lodge a Claim for Undetected Leak

  1. Visit the Icon Water leak allowance page:

  2. Call Icon Water on 02 6248 3111 or email [email protected] to request a claim form or more information.
  3. Prepare the following documents:
    • Your plumber’s leak report (we provide this)
    • A copy of your plumbing invoice
    • A copy of the water bill showing high usage
  4. Submit your claim as instructed by Icon Water.

Don’t Ignore the Signs

If you’ve received a surprise bill or suspect a hidden leak — don’t wait. The longer a leak goes undetected, the more water (and money) you could be losing.
