In MacGregor, Canberra ACT, our team was called to replace an outdated gas storage hot water system with a modern gas continuous flow unit. The homeowners wanted improved efficiency, space savings, and reliable hot water on demand.
Our tradesmen, Brayden and Jonno, carried out the installation with precision, testing the entire gas line for leaks and commissioning the new system to meet Australian standards.
Problem
The existing gas hot water storage tank was inefficient and approaching the end of its service life. The client wanted a compact, efficient alternative that wouldn’t waste energy keeping water hot all day.
Assessment
On site, Brayden and Jonno:
Disconnected and drained the old gas storage tank.
Conducted a full gas soundness test with a calibrated manometer and leak detection solution, ensuring safety before installation.
Checked appliance connections and compliance with AS5601 gas installation standards.
What We Did
Installed a Rinnai Builders B26 gas continuous flow hot water system, set at 50°C for safe household use.
Extended and reconfigured sections of 20mm copper gas pipework beneath the house and up to the new unit.
Carried out a full drop test on the gas system to confirm leak-free operation.
Commissioned the new unit, purged air from lines, and tested across multiple fixtures to confirm strong, consistent hot water delivery.
Materials & Standards
We installed:
Rinnai B26 Continuous Flow Gas HWS (50°C) – a 6-star rated, 26L/min unit designed for 2–3 bathrooms.
Copper pipework and B-Press gas fittings to ensure durability and compliance.
All works completed to AS/NZS 3500 Plumbing and Drainage and AS5601 Gas Installations standards.
Results
The homeowners now enjoy:
Endless hot water on demand – no more running out mid-shower.
Lower running costs thanks to 6-star efficiency.
Space-saving design with the wall-mounted Rinnai unit replacing the bulky old tank.
The gas safety test passed without issue, giving the client complete confidence in their upgraded hot water system.
Tips
Upgrade from storage to continuous flow if you want efficiency and endless hot water.
Annual servicing helps keep your gas appliance safe and running efficiently.
Check for leaks – if you ever smell gas, shut off at the meter and call a licensed gasfitter immediately.
Location Notes
This job was completed in MacGregor ACT, a suburb in Canberra’s north-west where many homes still rely on older gas storage systems. Replacing them with modern continuous flow units is one of the most common upgrades we complete in the area.
